Bit Storage for Leatherman Signal - Sharpener Replacement
Bit Storage for Leatherman Signal - Sharpener Replacement
*The part you receive may differ somewhat from the photos in the listing. I am always working to improve my parts so I will utilize a different printing method, material, or design tweak to provide you with the best part possible.
The Signal is one of Leatherman's best multitools. However, the "survival" attachments are worthless to most of us, at least on a day to day basis. I've designed a series of parts to make the Signal a better EDC tool for urban environments. This particular part replaces the sharpener with extra bit storage. This part similar in size to the sharpener attachment, but it feels a little more ergonomic. It follows the lines and angles of the tool, and does not interfere with the pliers. I've refined this design over many revisions, and the final result is a nice tight fit, with no play or slop. I keep a Leatherman glass breaker - 1/4" flat bit in mine, but it will hold any Leatherman bits. The bits are a snug fit with no slop, but they are not tight or difficult to remove. There is a slight ridge on the open edge to keep them in place, and for added security, the bit cannot be removed without opening the knife blade. To remove or install the part, you must first remove the bit, push down the locking mechanism and slide the part on or off. Keep in mind, the is plastic, and does not have the metal that the sharpener has, so some care should be taken during installation. It is recommended to keep a bit in the holder, and to avoid putting pressure on the overhanging area when there is not a bit in place. Without a bit in the compartment, there is an unsupported piece of plastic, and you wouldn't want to break it by bending it too far. With that in mind, the plastic this is made from is as durable as you can get.
These pieces are designed by myself and 3D printed in black carbon fiber reinforced nylon, which is the most durable material available for 3D printing.
I'm aware there are other versions of bit holders available for the Signal, but I'm a firm believer that this one provides a better functional part, as well as the fit and finish being more in line with the aesthetics of the tool itself. I would argue that my parts fit the the tool better than the factory ones.
If you ever plan to be spending some time in the wilderness, it can easily be converted back to survival mode with a quick switch.
This particular design was inspired by Todd Danko's (Tdanko) design on thingiverse. I've made my own version of it from scratch with a number of revisions and improvements, but I am selling my design with his approval. If you have access to a 3D printer and don't want to purchase my part, definitely check his out.
