Fire Starting Hinge Kit for Bit Kit - Ferrocerium and Magnesium Rods

$15.00

This kit consists of one Ferrocerium rod (for sparks) and one Magnesium rod (magnesium shavings are highly flammable).

The two rods can be stored in the top loops of the Leatherman bit kit cards, which has the added benefit of something extra to grab ahold of to pull the bit kit out of a sheath.

The kit comes with flexible retainer pieces which help secure the rods, as well as give a more finished look and feel. The rods simply press into place and are held secure. There are two single retainers, and one double retainer, which turns the kit into a hinge for the two bit cards to attach together. If using my bit kit holster, do not use the double hinge retainer. Available in black or orange.

They can also fit side by side in one bit slot on the bit kit.

The magnesium rod is a hair thinner than the ferro rod, so it comes with a wrap of tape around the middle for a perfect friction fit.

To use, create a small pile of magnesium shaving or filings using a file, or knife if you don’t have a file. Place the magnesium shavings on whatever first stage fire kindling you are using, and use the spine of your saw, or a blade to scrape the ferro rod. The ferro rod is relatively short, so use caution.

This is not intended to be a dedicated fire starting kit for routine camping, but it is perfect for occasional use, or keeping in your kit as an emergency backup.

As long as one end of each rod does not get worn thin, it will stay securely attached to the bit kit.
